Which Laser Is Right for You: HALO vs MOXI vs BBL - Olympia Aesthetics

If you’ve started looking into laser skin resurfacing, you’ve probably run into a wall of device names that all sound like they do the same thing. They don’t. Some devices target color in the skin, like brown spots and redness. Others resurface the surface and stimulate collagen underneath. A few do both. Picking the right one is less about the brand on the machine and more about what your skin actually needs and how much recovery time fits your life.

First, the two families: light-based vs fractional

Most of what we offer falls into one of two categories.

Light-based treatments send broadband light into the skin, where pigment and blood vessels absorb it. That makes them excellent for surface color problems: brown sun spots, freckling, redness, and the flushing pattern of rosacea. BBL and IPL live here.

Fractional resurfacing lasers create thousands of tiny microscopic treatment zones in the skin, leaving healthy tissue in between so you heal faster. This category improves texture, tone, fine lines, pores, and deeper sun damage by prompting the skin to rebuild. MOXI, HALO, ProFractional, and TRL live here, ranging from very gentle to more intensive.

BBL BroadBand Light: the color specialist

BBL (BroadBand Light) is Sciton’s light-based platform. It’s our go-to for the discoloration Florida gives so generously: sun spots, freckling, uneven tone, facial redness, and the diffuse flushing of rosacea. Because it targets pigment and vessels rather than resurfacing the whole surface, downtime is minimal. Brown spots often darken like coffee grounds for a few days, then flake away.

BBL also has a longevity story behind it. A Stanford pilot study found that regular BBL treatments shifted the gene-expression pattern of aged skin to more closely resemble younger skin at the molecular level. That’s the idea behind Forever Young BBL as a maintenance approach rather than a one-time fix. MOXI: gentle, low-downtime, safe across skin tones

MOXI is a non-ablative fractional laser at 1927nm. In plain terms, it’s a gentle resurfacing treatment that refreshes tone and texture and softens early sun damage without the recovery of a stronger laser. Most people are pink for a day or so and can wear makeup soon after.

MOXI is often the right first step for younger patients thinking about prevention, sometimes called prejuvenation, and it’s a comfortable entry point if you’ve never had a laser before. The 1927nm wavelength has a strong track record for treating discoloration, and importantly, the non-ablative approach can be used thoughtfully across a wider range of skin tones, including deeper skin, when settings are chosen carefully. Published work on 1927nm treatment in skin of color supports this when protocols are conservative.

HALO: deeper resurfacing when you want a bigger change

HALO is a hybrid fractional laser. It delivers two wavelengths at once, a non-ablative wavelength that works deeper to remodel collagen and an ablative wavelength that renews the surface. That combination is why HALO can produce results closer to a strong resurfacing laser while keeping recovery shorter than fully ablative treatments of the past.

HALO is the choice when the goal is a more noticeable reset: significant sun damage, rougher texture, enlarged pores, and dullness that a gentler laser won’t fully address. The trade-off is downtime. Expect a few days of redness, swelling, and a sandpaper texture as the skin sheds and rebuilds. Every candidacy call is made in person. Deeper skin tones can absolutely be treated, but device choice and settings matter more, which is exactly why the consultation exists.

How to choose

Start with your main concern.

If it’s color, brown spots, redness, or rosacea, a light-based treatment like BBL is usually the answer.

If it’s texture, tone, or early aging with little downtime to spare, MOXI is a smart, gentle starting point.

If you want a meaningful reset and can plan around recovery, HALO covers deeper sun damage and texture in fewer sessions.

Then factor in your skin tone, your downtime tolerance, and whether you’re maintaining results or correcting something specific. Many patients end up combining approaches over time, for example BBL for color plus MOXI or HALO for texture. The Florida-sun context

Living on the Gulf Coast changes the math. Chronic sun exposure here means more accumulated pigment and redness, and it also means aftercare matters. Sun exposure right after any laser can trigger unwanted pigment, so we typically schedule resurfacing for cooler months or build in strict sun protection, and we’re candid about timing during your consultation. Diligent daily SPF isn’t a suggestion here, it’s part of the treatment.

Which laser is best for sun spots and brown discoloration?
For surface pigment, meaning classic sun spots, freckling, and general unevenness, a light-based treatment like BBL is usually the first choice. It targets the brown pigment directly, the spots darken and flake away over about a week, and downtime is minimal. When discoloration is deeper, more diffuse, or has resisted light treatment, fractional resurfacing does better: MOXI handles early or moderate pigment gently, and HALO reaches damage BBL cannot. One critical caveat: if the discoloration is actually melasma rather than sun spots, high-energy light can make it worse, and the plan changes entirely toward gentler, layered care. Telling those apart, and confirming any unusual spot is benign, is exactly why we assess in person before recommending a device rather than selling a one-size-fits-all package.

What’s the real difference between MOXI and HALO?
They come from the same company, Sciton, but do different jobs. MOXI is a gentle non-ablative fractional laser that stays superficial. It refreshes tone, softens early sun damage, and works well for prevention and maintenance, with only a day or two of pinkness and light flaking. HALO is a hybrid fractional laser firing two wavelengths at once, one working deep to remodel collagen and one renewing the surface, so it delivers a much bigger correction for established sun damage, rough texture, and enlarged pores, at the cost of a few days of real downtime. The shorthand we use with patients: MOXI refreshes, HALO resets. Many people combine them over time, using HALO for the initial correction and MOXI a couple of times a year to hold the result.

Can these lasers be used on darker skin tones?
Some can, with the right device and conservative settings. The non-ablative 1927nm wavelength MOXI uses has published support in skin of color, including a 2023 study in Fitzpatrick types II through IV that reported only mild, self-limited side effects with conservative protocols and no post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Light-based treatments like BBL and the more aggressive resurfacing lasers carry higher risk on deeper skin tones, because the light that targets unwanted pigment can also see the skin's own melanin. That does not mean laser is off the table. It means device selection, settings, and sometimes a test area matter far more. Candidacy is always decided in a face-to-face evaluation, where we look at your skin tone, history, and goals before recommending anything.

How much downtime should I expect?
It ranges from essentially none to about a week, tracking with how deeply the device works. BBL is minimal: warmth and mild pinkness that settle fast, with treated brown spots flaking off over several days. MOXI brings a day or two of pinkness and a fine sandpaper texture that sheds by day three to five, and most patients are comfortable in makeup within a day or two. HALO means a few days of redness, swelling, and peeling before the fresh skin shows, so people often plan it around a long weekend. ProFractional and TRL sit at the top of the range, with recovery depending on the depth we choose. We are candid about downtime at the consultation, because the right laser is the one whose recovery actually fits your life.

How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the device and what you are correcting. BBL typically runs as a short series of two to three sessions spaced several weeks apart, then a maintenance session or two per year to stay ahead of new pigment. MOXI is designed to build gradually, so most patients do a series of about three sessions a month apart. HALO is the opposite pattern: because it treats more deeply per visit, many patients see a strong change in one to two sessions, then maintain with gentler treatments. Deeper resurfacing options like ProFractional and TRL are usually planned as single, more intensive treatments. At your consultation we map your concerns to a specific device and give you a session count and cost estimate before anything is scheduled.

When is the best time of year to get laser treatment in Florida?
Cooler months are the sweet spot, roughly late fall through early spring. Freshly treated skin is extra sensitive to UV, and sun exposure too soon after a laser can trigger new pigment or undo the clearing you paid for. Florida complicates this, since our UV index stays high most of the year, but October through March gives you shorter days, weaker sun, and cooler temperatures that make strict aftercare much easier to live with. That said, summer treatment is workable for motivated patients: it requires diligent daily SPF, hats, and genuine sun avoidance during healing, and we may favor gentler devices like MOXI or BBL over deeper resurfacing.
