A skin assessment to confirm microneedling is the right tool for your concern and to plan your series, with PRF as an option.

Numbing cream for about 30 minutes, then the SkinPen treatment, which takes 20 to 40 minutes. Most patients find it very tolerable.

Aftercare

Expect redness and a warm, tight feeling like a mild sunburn for 24 to 48 hours. We send you home with soothing aftercare.

Is microneedling safe for all skin tones?

Yes. Because SkinPen microneedling is mechanical rather than heat-based, it carries a low risk of pigment changes and is considered safe across a wide range of skin tones, including darker skin.

How many sessions will I need?

Most concerns respond best to a series of three spaced about four weeks apart, with deeper acne scarring sometimes needing more. We plan your series at the consultation.

How much downtime is there?

Expect redness and a warm, tight feeling for 24 to 48 hours, similar to a mild sunburn. Many patients return to normal activities and makeup within a day or two.

Does it hurt?

We apply numbing cream first, so most patients are comfortable. You will feel light vibration and pressure, more noticeable over bony areas, but it is brief and manageable.

Microneedling: candidacy, recovery and limitations

Microneedling creates a controlled injury to stimulate a healing response. Redness, tightness, dryness, discomfort and pinpoint bleeding can occur. Pigment changes, infection and scarring are also possible, so “minimal downtime” should not be read as “no risk.” A systematic safety review describes both short-lived reactions and less common persistent complications.

Before treatment, discuss active breakouts or infection, cold sores, abnormal scarring, medicines, bleeding problems and any condition that affects healing. Ask when to restart makeup and active skin-care products for your specific treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice from the prescribing clinician.

FDA clearance applies to specific devices and uses. It does not establish that every concern, body area or combination treatment has been reviewed. The FDA has not authorized microneedling devices to deliver cosmetics, medicines or blood products into the skin.
