Daxxify vs Botox: What’s the Difference and Which Lasts Longer?

Daxxify vs Botox comparison - confident woman with glowing skin

So There’s a New Wrinkle Relaxer in Town

If you’ve been getting Botox for a while, you’ve probably heard someone at the med spa mention Daxxify. Maybe your injector brought it up. Maybe you saw it on Instagram. Either way, the question is always the same: should I switch?

It’s a fair question. Botox has been around since the early 2000s and it’s still the most popular cosmetic treatment in the country. But Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm, if you want to impress your friends) hit the market in 2023 with one big promise: it lasts longer.

At Olympia Aesthetics in Palm Harbor, we offer both. And we’re not here to sell you on one over the other. We’re here to help you figure out which one actually makes sense for your face, your budget, and your schedule.

The Basics: What They Have in Common

Both Botox and Daxxify are neuromodulators. They work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, the ones that show up when you squint, frown, or raise your eyebrows. The active ingredient in both is botulinum toxin type A, so the core mechanism is the same.

Both are FDA-approved for treating glabellar lines (those “11” lines between your eyebrows). Both are administered the same way: a series of small injections that take about 10 to 15 minutes. And both have solid safety profiles backed by decades of research and clinical trials.

If you’ve had Botox at our Palm Harbor clinic before, the Daxxify experience will feel nearly identical in the chair.

The Big Difference: How Long They Last

Here’s where things get interesting.

Botox typically lasts 3 to 4 months for most patients. Some people metabolize it faster (hello, athletes and high-metabolism folks), and some get a solid 4 months every time. But the general rule is you’re coming back about 3 to 4 times a year.

Daxxify, on the other hand, was shown in clinical trials to last up to 6 months for the majority of patients. Some patients in the studies saw results lasting 9 months. That’s roughly twice as long as a standard Botox treatment.

The reason? Daxxify uses a novel peptide technology to stabilize the botulinum toxin, instead of the human serum albumin (a protein derived from human blood) that traditional neuromodulators use. This peptide formulation appears to help the product bind more effectively to nerve receptors.

For patients who are tired of scheduling appointments every 3 months, that’s a pretty compelling upgrade.

Cost Comparison: It’s Not as Simple as Price Per Unit

Let’s talk money, because that’s what everyone really wants to know.

Daxxify costs more per treatment than Botox. That’s just the reality. If you’re comparing a single appointment, Botox wins on sticker price every time.

But here’s the thing most people miss: if Daxxify lasts 6 months and Botox lasts 3, you’re getting two treatments a year instead of three or four. When you do the math on annual cost, Daxxify can actually come out comparable, sometimes even cheaper, depending on how many units you need and how quickly you metabolize Botox.

We always recommend thinking about it in terms of yearly cost rather than per-visit cost. Check our pricing page for current rates, or just ask us during your consultation. We’ll run the numbers with you.

Results: Do They Actually Look Different?

Honestly? Most patients can’t tell the difference in the mirror. Both products smooth out wrinkles effectively. Both kick in within a few days (Daxxify may have a slightly faster onset for some patients, typically around 1 to 2 days vs. 3 to 5 for Botox, but this varies).

The quality of your results has a lot more to do with your injector’s skill than which product is in the syringe. Placement, dosing, understanding your facial anatomy: that’s what separates a natural result from a frozen forehead.

At Olympia Aesthetics, Dr. Oliver Morris handles all neurotoxin injections personally. That’s not a sales pitch. It’s just how we operate. You’re not getting handed off to someone you’ve never met.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Daxxify?

Daxxify tends to be a great fit for:

  • Busy people who hate scheduling appointments. If getting to the med spa every 3 months feels like a chore, cutting that to twice a year is a real lifestyle upgrade.
  • Fast metabolizers. If your Botox seems to wear off at the 2-month mark, Daxxify’s longer-lasting formulation might give you the full duration you’ve been wanting.
  • Experienced Botox patients looking for something new. If you’ve been getting Botox for years and you’re curious, there’s really no downside to trying Daxxify for a round to see how it compares for you personally.
  • Anyone who values fewer needle visits. Less time in the chair means more time doing literally anything else.

Who Should Probably Stick with Botox?

Botox isn’t going anywhere, and there are good reasons to stay with it:

  • First-timers. If you’ve never had a neuromodulator before, we usually recommend starting with Botox. It’s the most studied, most predictable option. Once you know how your face responds to neurotoxin treatment, you can explore other options with confidence.
  • Budget-conscious patients who prefer smaller payments. Even if the annual cost is similar, some people prefer paying less per visit rather than a larger amount twice a year.
  • Patients who like tweaking their look. Because Botox wears off faster, you have more frequent opportunities to adjust your dosing or placement. If you’re still dialing in your ideal look, that flexibility matters.

Can You Switch Between Them?

Yes. There’s no medical reason you can’t try Daxxify for one round and go back to Botox the next, or vice versa. They’re not like medications that build up in your system. Once a neuromodulator wears off, it’s gone, and you can choose whichever product you want for your next treatment.

We have patients who alternate based on their schedule. Getting Daxxify before a long vacation or busy season, then going back to Botox when they want more flexibility. It’s completely fine.

What About Xeomin and Dysport?

While we’re at it, Daxxify and Botox aren’t the only options. Xeomin is another neuromodulator we offer that’s sometimes called “naked Botox” because it doesn’t have the complexing proteins that Botox has. Some patients who’ve developed resistance to Botox find that Xeomin works better for them.

Dysport is another alternative with a slightly different diffusion pattern, meaning it spreads a bit more than Botox, which can be an advantage for larger treatment areas like the forehead.

The point is: you have options. And the best choice depends on your anatomy, your goals, and your lifestyle. That’s what your consultation is for.

The Bottom Line

Daxxify isn’t “better” than Botox, and Botox isn’t “better” than Daxxify. They’re different tools, and the right one depends on you.

If you want longer-lasting results and fewer appointments, Daxxify is worth trying. If you want the most studied product with maximum flexibility, Botox is still the gold standard for a reason.

Either way, the most important factor is who’s holding the syringe. At Olympia Aesthetics, that’s always a physician with thousands of injections under their belt.
