If you live in Florida, your skin has taken more sun than you probably realize. Years of it show up as brown spots on the cheeks, a red flush that never fully calms down, and tiny broken vessels around the nose. BBL BroadBand Light is one of the treatments we reach for most often at Olympia Aesthetics & Wellness to walk that damage back. Here’s how it works, what it actually treats, and what a session feels like.
What is BBL BroadBand Light?
BBL stands for BroadBand Light. It’s a medical broadband pulsed-light device made by Sciton, and the platform we use for it is often called Forever Young BBL. Instead of a single laser wavelength, BBL delivers a broad spectrum of light that your practitioner can filter and tune to target a specific problem, whether that’s brown pigment, redness, or both in the same session.
People sometimes call it a “BBL laser,” but technically it’s an intense pulsed light system, not a laser. That distinction matters less to your results than it does to the physics. What you need to know is that it’s a versatile, well-studied light treatment with a strong track record for sun damage and vascular redness.

What BBL treats
BBL is a workhorse for sun-worn skin. In one appointment it can address several concerns at once:
- Sun spots and brown spots. The light is absorbed by excess melanin in the pigment, heating and breaking it up so your body can clear it.
- Facial redness and flushing. Tuned to a vascular setting, the light is absorbed by the hemoglobin in tiny vessels, which helps calm diffuse redness.
- Rosacea and broken capillaries. Those persistent red patches and visible vessels around the nose and cheeks respond well to light targeting the blood vessels feeding them.
- Overall tone and texture. Many patients notice their skin simply looks more even and awake after a series, not just spot-treated.

The “Forever Young” idea and the Stanford research
The name Forever Young isn’t just marketing. It points to research out of Stanford University on what BBL does at the level of your genes.
In a pilot study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, dermatology researchers used a technique to measure gene activity in aged human skin before and after BBL treatment. Skin aging was linked to altered activity in more than two thousand genes. After BBL, a large share of those genes shifted back toward the pattern seen in younger skin. The authors described it as skin gene expression being “rejuvenated” toward a more youthful profile, not just a cosmetic change on the surface (Chang et al., 2013).
It was a small pilot, so it’s fair to hold it loosely. But it’s a real, peer-reviewed reason behind the maintenance philosophy: patients who keep up regular BBL sessions over years often hold onto their results better than a single treatment alone would predict.
How BBL works, step by step
The mechanism is simple once you picture it. BBL sends pulses of broadband light into the skin. That light is absorbed by whatever target you’ve tuned it to, either the brown pigment (melanin) or the red vessels (hemoglobin). The absorbed light turns into gentle heat, which damages the target while sparing the surrounding skin. Your body then clears the broken-down pigment or treats the coagulated vessel as part of normal healing.
For vascular concerns specifically, that heat is transferred to the vessel wall and helps the small vessel close down, which is why redness and visible capillaries fade over the weeks after treatment (Piccolo et al., 2024).
What to expect during and after
Most people describe the sensation as a quick warm snap, like a light rubber band, with each pulse. Sessions are usually short. No general anesthesia, no needles for the light portion itself.
Here’s the part that surprises people. If you’re treating brown spots, those spots often get darker first. Over the next few days they turn into what looks like coffee-ground specks, then flake and slough off on their own. That’s the treatment working, not a problem. Don’t pick at them. Let them shed.

Downtime is minimal for most patients. Many go back to normal activities the same day, though the flaking phase is more visible if you treated a lot of brown pigment at once. You’ll want to be diligent with sunscreen and skip direct sun while you heal.
Why a series and maintenance matter
One session gives you real improvement, especially on isolated sun spots. But most of the concerns BBL treats, especially diffuse redness and rosacea, respond best to a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart. Intense pulsed light studies in rosacea show meaningful, lasting reduction in redness and visible vessels when treatment is done as a course rather than a one-off (Zhai et al., 2024).
Maintenance is the other half. Sun damage in Florida is ongoing, so periodic BBL sessions, often a couple of times a year, help you keep the gains rather than watching new spots creep back. This is where the Forever Young philosophy lives in practice.

Is BBL the same as a laser?
Not technically, though everyone calls it a BBL laser in conversation. A laser delivers a single wavelength of light. BBL stands for BroadBand Light, and it is an intense pulsed light system made by Sciton that delivers a broad, tunable spectrum. That tunability is its advantage: your provider filters the light to target brown pigment, or the hemoglobin in redness and visible vessels, or both in the same session. The physics distinction matters less to your results than the fit between tool and problem. For surface color, sun spots, freckling, redness, and rosacea, BBL is often the better instrument than a true laser, while resurfacing jobs like texture and deeper sun damage belong to fractional lasers such as MOXI and HALO. We often pair the two approaches for complete correction.
Does BBL hurt?
Most patients find it very tolerable. Each pulse feels like a quick warm snap, commonly compared to a light rubber band flick, and the sensation ends as soon as the pulse does. Sessions are short, there are no needles involved in the light treatment itself, and no anesthesia is needed. Comfort is also adjustable: settings can be tuned, cooling is used, and we adapt to sensitive areas as we go. Most people walk out with nothing more than warmth and mild pinkness, similar to a bit of sun. Sensitivity varies from person to person and by area treated, so if you are nervous about discomfort, say so at the consultation. Why did my sun spots get darker after BBL?
That darkening is expected, and it usually means the treatment did its job. The light energy is absorbed by the melanin in each spot, and over the first 24 to 48 hours the treated pigment rises and darkens into small, dry, coffee-ground-like specks on the surface. It can look alarming if nobody warned you, which is why we always do. Over the next three to seven days those specks flake and slough off on their own, taking the pigment with them and revealing clearer skin underneath. The important rule is to let them shed naturally: no picking, no scrubbing, no exfoliating them off early, since forcing it can irritate the skin and risk new pigment. Gentle skincare and daily sunscreen through the flaking phase protect the result. If anything seems off, call us.
How many BBL sessions will I need?
It depends on what we are treating. Isolated sun spots may clear well in one or two sessions. Diffuse redness, rosacea, and overall tone respond best to a series, typically a few sessions spaced several weeks apart, which is how the published intense pulsed light studies achieve their results. After the initial series, maintenance matters in Florida: sun exposure here is ongoing, so a couple of sessions per year keeps new pigment and redness from rebuilding. Can BBL treat rosacea and broken capillaries?
Yes, and it is one of the things BBL does best. Tuned to a vascular setting, the light is absorbed by hemoglobin in the small vessels that create diffuse flushing, persistent redness, and the visible capillaries that gather around the nose and cheeks. The absorbed energy gently heats the vessel wall so the vessel closes down and fades over the weeks after treatment. Published research on intense pulsed light in rosacea, including recent meta-analysis data, supports meaningful and durable reduction in redness and visible vessels when treatment is done as a series rather than a single session. Rosacea is a chronic condition, so we pair the treatment course with periodic maintenance and sensible trigger management. Many patients see tone and texture improve alongside the redness as well.
Is there downtime with BBL?
For most patients, very little. Expect warmth and mild pinkness right after treatment, similar to a light sunburn, settling within hours. Many people return to work or normal activities the same day. The one visible phase comes if we treated brown pigment: over the first day or two, treated spots darken into what look like coffee-ground specks, then flake off naturally across roughly three to seven days. That is the treatment working, and the skin underneath comes up brighter and more even. You can generally wear makeup quickly, though we will give you specific guidance. The practical commitments are simple: do not pick at the flaking spots, be diligent with sunscreen, and skip direct sun while you heal. Redness and vessel improvements continue developing over the following two to four weeks.
