Run your fingertips across your cheek in good light. If it catches a little, if pores look wider than they used to, if old breakouts left small dents, or if the whole surface just reads dull, you’re noticing skin texture. It’s one of the most common reasons people walk into Olympia Aesthetics & Wellness, and it’s one of the most treatable once you understand what’s actually going on underneath.

This page is the hub for our texture and scarring content. It explains what drives rough or uneven skin, walks through the treatments that genuinely help, and gives you a straight comparison so you can match a concern to the right approach. At Olympia, aesthetic procedures are performed by Olympia Morris, PA-C under medical oversight by Dr. Oliver Morris, Medical Director. We serve Palm Harbor along with Clearwater, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs, and Tampa.

What actually drives rough texture, pores, and scars

Skin texture isn’t one problem. It’s several, and they often show up together.

Enlarged pores. Pores look bigger when oil output is high, when skin loses firmness with age, and when the surrounding collagen thins so the pore opening isn’t held taut anymore. Sun damage makes this worse over time.

Dullness and roughness. Dead cells build up on the surface faster than they shed. Add sun exposure, dehydration, and slowed cell turnover, and light stops bouncing off your skin cleanly. That’s the flat, tired look.

Acne scarring. When a breakout damages the deeper layer of skin, the body repairs it imperfectly. You can end up with small pitted depressions (atrophic scars) or raised areas. These are structural, so surface products alone won’t move them much.

General uneven skin texture. Bumpiness, fine crepey areas, and a surface that photographs poorly usually trace back to collagen quality. Collagen is the scaffolding. When it weakens, the surface loses its smooth, even bounce.

The through-line for most of these is collagen. That’s why the treatments that work best are the ones that trigger your skin to build new collagen in a controlled way.

The treatments that help

We group texture treatments into three families. Each one works differently, and each one suits different concerns and skin types.

RF microneedling with Sylfirm X

Radiofrequency microneedling combines two things: tiny needles that create controlled micro-channels, and radiofrequency energy delivered at a precise depth. The needles alone stimulate a wound-healing response. The RF energy adds targeted heat that remodels collagen deeper down. Olympia uses Sylfirm X for this. (We do not offer Morpheus8.)

RF microneedling is a workhorse for uneven skin texture, enlarged pores, mild laxity, and certain acne scars. Because the energy is delivered below the surface, it tends to be gentler on the outer skin than resurfacing lasers, which makes it a reasonable option across a wider range of skin tones. In a review of 75 patients treated for enlarged facial pores, fractional microneedle radiofrequency was safe and effective, with results improving as more sessions were completed [1]. For acne scarring specifically, one study reported meaningful improvement in the large majority of patients treated with microneedling radiofrequency, with a favorable safety profile [2].

Fractional laser resurfacing (HALO, ProFractional, MOXI)

Fractional lasers treat a fraction of the skin at a time, leaving healthy tissue in between to speed healing. That fractional approach is what made modern resurfacing far more practical than the old full-field lasers.

A systematic review of fractional laser for acne scars found consistent, measurable improvement, with results improving further when paired with adjunct techniques for deeper scars [3]. Laser resurfacing is powerful, but skin type matters here. Darker skin tones carry a higher risk of post-treatment pigment changes, so device choice and settings need to be matched carefully. That’s a conversation for your consultation.

Chemical peels

A chemical peel applies a solution that dissolves the bonds between surface cells, prompting controlled exfoliation and turnover. Lighter peels brighten dullness and smooth mild roughness with little to no downtime. Medium-depth peels reach further and can help with texture and superficial scarring. Olympia offers medical-grade VI Peel treatments as well as laser peel options.

Peels have a long track record. A review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology describes peels of varying depths as effective tools for photodamage, dyschromia, and superficial scarring when the agent is matched to the patient and the concern [4].

Matching a treatment to your concern

Here’s the quick version. Your actual plan depends on your skin, so treat this as a starting map, not a prescription.

Your main concern Often the best fit Typical downtime
Dullness, early texture, glow MOXI or a light chemical peel Minimal to a few days
Enlarged pores RF microneedling (Sylfirm X) 1 to 3 days
Uneven texture with mild laxity RF microneedling (Sylfirm X) 1 to 3 days
Sun damage plus texture HALO Several days to a week
Mild to moderate acne scars RF microneedling or ProFractional A few days to a week
Deeper, pitted acne scars ProFractional, sometimes combined About a week
Melasma-prone or deeper skin tones RF microneedling or a tailored peel Varies

What to realistically expect

A few honest points, because managing expectations is half the result.

It’s usually a series. One session helps, but texture and scarring respond best to a course of treatments spaced weeks apart. That gives your skin time to build collagen between sessions. Most people plan for three or more, and results keep building for months afterward.

Improvement, not erasure. These treatments soften and refine. Deep scars can improve dramatically but rarely vanish completely. Pores shrink in appearance but don’t disappear, because everyone has pores.

Downtime is real, even when it’s short. Expect some redness, mild swelling, and a sandpapery or flaky phase depending on the treatment. That’s the skin doing its work.

Sunscreen is non-negotiable. Fresh, resurfaced skin burns and pigments easily. Daily SPF protects your investment and lowers the risk of pigment problems, especially with lasers.

We’ll build a plan around your skin type, your concern, and your calendar. Sometimes the right answer is a single device. Sometimes it’s a combination over time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best treatment for uneven skin texture?
There isn’t one universal answer. For early texture and dullness, MOXI or a light peel often works well. For pores and firmer collagen support, RF microneedling with Sylfirm X is a common pick. For sun damage layered on top of texture, HALO. The best choice depends on your skin type and how deep the concern runs, which is what a consultation sorts out.

How can I improve my skin texture at home versus in a clinic?
At home, consistent sunscreen, a gentle retinoid, and regular exfoliation genuinely help maintain smoother skin. But home products work at the surface. To remodel collagen and address scarring or true structural texture, you need an in-clinic treatment that reaches the deeper layers, like RF microneedling or laser resurfacing.

Does RF microneedling or laser work better for acne scars?
Both help. RF microneedling with Sylfirm X is often chosen for mild to moderate scarring and works across a wide range of skin tones. Ablative fractional lasers like ProFractional reach deeper and can be stronger for pitted scars, though they need more careful selection for darker skin. Many plans combine approaches over time.

How many sessions will I need?
Most texture and scarring plans run as a series, commonly three or more sessions spaced several weeks apart. Your skin keeps building collagen for months after, so results improve gradually rather than all at once.

Is there downtime?
It varies by treatment. Light peels and MOXI usually mean a few days of mild redness or flaking. RF microneedling typically means one to three days of redness and slight swelling. Deeper laser resurfacing like ProFractional can mean about a week. We’ll tell you exactly what to plan for based on your treatment.

Are these treatments safe for darker skin tones?
Many are, with the right device and settings. RF microneedling and carefully chosen peels tend to be more forgiving across skin tones. Ablative lasers carry a higher risk of pigment changes in deeper skin, so we match the approach to your skin during your consultation rather than using a one-size setting.
